A Business Is Born

Dear World,
I'm opening a business. I'm pretty excited about it.
Life as a new mother has been challenging. I've struggled with breastfeeding. I struggled with my birth experience. I'm struggling to get my 9 month old to eat real food.
The one thing that has helped me through these challenges is: knowledge.
If there's one thing I CAN do, it is read. A lot.
While my daughter is tucked away for the night, or for naptime, I have been toiling away, reading birth books, breastfeeding books, online articles, amusing Facebook mommy wars, and watching instructional videos. There's a lot of conflicting information out there. There isn't a one size fits all approach to parenting. Basically your life turns into a science experiment and through trial and error (lots of errors, actually) you figure out what is best for you and your family.

I can snuggle and work at the same time, right?

I'm opening KangaTu for a few reasons:
1. I love educating people. I am a certified classroom teacher with a Master's degree in Education. I get really excited about sharing information with people and empowering them to make informed decisions.
2. Lack of childbirth class options. I actually skipped taking a childbirth course when I was pregnant because I had read so much that my doula felt I didn't need a class. I also was having a hard time fitting a series into my schedule because I worked retail, and surely I'm not the only person with that problem. Online there are some classes, but they are all in video format...meaning you can't just stop the video and ask the teacher a question. Education is a social event, and information is better retained when you are interacting with another person.
3. Being a WAHM sounds great. (That's "Work At Home Mom," for any newbies.) I could go back to teaching in a classroom, but unfortunately teachers make barely enough money to cover the expense of childcare. So I decided to get creative instead. I also like the idea of job stability for the next time our family  moves. (This happens frequently.)
4. I live in an amazingly active parenting community. Currently I'm located in the Wilmington, NC area and there are so many like-minded people here who are passionate about birth, breastfeeding, babywearing, and other crunchy-mama topics. I have been really enjoying getting acquainted with everyone here.

So there you have it. Opening a business is kind of scary, but with a good support system and determination, it's very doable. On future blog posts, I will share with you some of my struggles and triumphs as a new mom, and feature some guest bloggers with their experiences as well.
Until next time,
Stephanie <3
